Roof Truss - Structural Oak
Barn conversion at Hill Common near Taunton, Somerset.
Peter Quinain Hardwoods, Graham Edwards architectural technician and Bucknall partnership take on engineering challenge in barn conversion.
Peter Quinain Hardwoods were recommended by the owner’s architect Jason Jackson Associates of Thurlbear, Somerset to supply, fabricate and erect a number of green oak structures for a single storey barn conversion. The structure provided a separate annex with two green oak collared trusses and the main building, pictured, which proved somewhat of a challenge, having various pitch angles of roof, variations of roof structure and wall angles, which needed to be married together to provide a continuous slate roof around a glazed courtyard.
Having two pitched roofs of varying angles joined by a mono pitch roof to continue the structure provided and real engineering challenge. Variable ground levels and an offset retained stone wall along one side further increased the complexity of the task. With much calculation, drawings, creativity and site measurements our architectural technician, Graham Edwards formulated a plan which would enable the build. The Bucknall Partnership working together with Peter Quinain’s and Graham Edwards, fabricated the green oak trusses to the design. The trusses were “dry” jointed and then constructed on site and the various purlins and braces measured, cut and jointed on site.
The result was a completely individual structure, which looks fabulous and enables the building to link together to form the single storey dwelling the customer was looking for. The calculations and fabrication proved a complicated project but was worth the extra effort involved to get the finished result. The green oak has been treated with linseed oil and looks spectacular as the building is nearing completion. Further work on doors, floors and other finishes is continuing,
