Case study
Five Barn renovation project on the edge of
the Quantock Hills in Somerset.
After receiving a recommendation to Peter Quinain's Mac contacted us with a request for supplying and
fitting the structural oak for his self build barn conversion. Following our initial discussions it became clear that we needed a meeting with all concerned which was
subsequently arranged. Mac and his architect Jason Jackson met with the Quinain team and our specialist oak fabricators, Tim Bucknall, with the proposed plans. Following detailed discussions a number of issues
were identified and tackled. The barns being some 6000 square feet, required some rather large sections of single oak as well as braced trusses, a four metre Oak screen, wall plates and posts in addition to oak floor joists and sections for an oak bridge which would traverse the main bedroom and further five bedrooms linking the three major barns together. As well as providing the timber itself, the experience of the team provided options for joinery using a marriage of traditional and modern methods which would meet with engineering requirements and building and planning regulations. Although in relation to time a long way off, the internal requirements for flooring, doors, and finishes were discussed.
Mac instructed us to proceed with the requirements which included four 7.5 metre sections of 350mm x 300mm.
We sourced and acquired the structural grade oak from which was produced the braced trusses, main support beams and purlins together with the range of other pieces. Our partner company undertook the site erection on a hand crafted basis to retain the integrity of the building. The results were even more impressive than Mac had anticipated, from the
four metre Green Oak screen to the beams and braced trusses. As work has continued Mac has now instructed us to facilitate the integral finishes to match the structural oak and we are providing options for bespoke doors, floors, staircases and associated cast iron furniture.
Mac seemed very pleased with the service and has recently commented, "It was plainly obvious from the outset that the expertise Peter Quinain offered was both highly qualified and based on a lifetime of experience, even my architect was hugely impressed by the level of knowledge and updated his drawings based upon the information discussed. With such an eye for detail required to maintain the integrity of the barns the advice as well as physical engineering from the initial stages has kept costs on track and resulted in a most impressive atmosphere to the conversion. We are now into the final stages of the project and will be using Quinain for the engineered oak floors over our under floor heating as well as oak doors and staircases for the barns."
